From 20 to 23 September 2026, Novo mesto hosted the international conference of the project Citizens from local communities – the value of the EU, known as EU citizens. Over four days, citizens and organisations from Slovenia, Malta, Serbia, Greece, Croatia, Bulgaria and Italy explored together what the European Union means for people in local communities, how citizens can take a more active part in shaping their towns, and how everyday choices, including the way we travel, contribute to a shared European future.

When people hear the phrase “EU project”, many imagine forms, reports and long documents. The international conference of the EU citizens project in Novo mesto showed what lies behind them: people from different towns who meet, listen to one another and discover how much they have in common.

The central day of the international conference took place on Tuesday, 22 September 2026, in the heart of Novo mesto. The date was no coincidence: the conference was held during European Mobility Week, and its main part coincided with the European Car-Free Day, when towns and cities across Europe open their streets to people rather than cars.
