As part of the international CERV project DELIBERATE (Democracy, Engagement & Literacy to Build Inclusive European Representation and Trust in Elections), an inspiring event titled “Youth Assembly for Participatory Democracy” took place in Thessaloniki, Greece. The event brought together young people and organisation representatives from Greece, Bulgaria, Kosovo, and Slovenia with a clear mission: to foster democratic participation, strengthen trust in institutions, and actively involve young people in social and political life.
The Slovenian delegation comprised six active participants who represented their organisation excellently throughout the programme. Together with their peers from other countries, they co-created an open space for dialogue, intercultural learning, and the exchange of good practices in active citizenship.
From Theory and E-Participation to Serious Debates
The programme began with an introductory session focusing on the project’s goals and the methodology of the Youth Assembly. Participants first deepened their knowledge of how European institutions operate, particularly the European Parliament – exploring its structure, political groups, legislative procedures, and voting processes.
Special emphasis was also placed on modern approaches: during an e-participation workshop, the youth explored how digital tools and online platforms can bring decision-making processes closer to everyday citizens and increase their engagement.
Stepping into the Shoes of MEPs
Theory quickly turned into practice as participants stepped into the roles of Members of the European Parliament (MEPs). Divided into thematic committees, they debated a draft legislative proposal. Through intense discussions, negotiations, and the drafting of amendments, they gained first-hand experience of how complex yet crucial democratic processes are. The focus remained on respectful communication, equal inclusion of all, and building consensus.
The Highlight: Plenary Session Simulation
The most exciting part of the event was the simulation of a European Parliament plenary session. In a true parliamentary atmosphere, the young participants presented their proposals, defended political positions, formed alliances, and voted on amendments. The Slovenian team of six actively participated in the debates, making a significant contribution to the formulation of the final joint proposals and closing recommendations.
Invaluable Experience and Looking to the Future
The final days were reserved for reflection and evaluation. The youth discussed the challenges of modern democracy and ways to amplify young voices in decision-making processes.
In addition to direct knowledge about European politics, the participants gained highly enhanced soft skills:
- Critical thinking and public speaking
- Negotiation skills and teamwork
- Intercultural collaboration experience
For the Slovenian delegation, the DELIBERATE project was an invaluable opportunity to expand their international network and proof that young people play a vital role in shaping a more democratic, inclusive, and connected Europe.
